Marsh Marigold

Caltha palustris

Hardy Plant Bloody Dock

First to bloom in spring, often pushing up through layers of snow or ice. This native is a charmer with cup-shaped bright yellow flowers grows well in moist loamy soil, along the banks of a stream, in the shallow edges of a pond or rain garden. Because it blooms before trees leaf out, it can be grown in full sun to full shade. In the heat of the summer, it can die back to the ground, so if you want to keep the green foliage, make sure the roots stay cool, and foliage has some relief from hot summer sun.

Size: 6 to 12 inches
Zone: 2-8
Light: Sun to partial shade
