Business meeting with Board Elections and the Presentation: The Botany of Halloween by Stephen G. Saupe, PhD
Many plants are associated with our spookiest holiday. This presentation will describe the history of this holiday and especially focus on plants related to witchcraft and how the pumpkin became the quintessential symbol of Halloween.
Dr. Saupe is a Professor in the joint biology department of the College of St. Benedict and Saint John’s University where he teaches courses in plant physiology, plant systematics and introductory biology. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign. He is one of the leaders of the St John’s maple syrup operation. He has a small hobby farm where he raises an assortment of fruits, veggies and nuts (especially hazelnuts).
