Marsh Marigold, Giant
Caltha polypetala
Twice as large as the native marsh marigold, this beauty is a spring showpiece. Like the native, it starts early, pushing up through late spring snows, and blooms bright yellow cup-shaped flowers prior to trees leafing out. Plant in moist loamy soil, along the banks of a stream, in the shallow edges of a pond or rain garden. In the heat of the summer, it can die back to the ground, so if you want to keep the green foliage, make sure the roots stay cool, and foliage has some relief from hot summer sun.
