Sedge, Black Flowering
Carex nigra

Native to northeastern US, Canada and other northern hemisphere countries such as Russia, Iran and Mongolia. Naturally forms in the damp soils of sphagnum bogs, wet grasslands, subalpine regions and mountain streams. Dark blue-green to blue-gray foliage with a powdery white underside that is easily grown in wet soils and shallow water. Best in part shade, it will also tolerate full sun as long as soil is wet. The foliage is green, but the “black” in the common name refers to the attractive black flowers and seed heads. A nice tufted grass for the edge of a pond that stays relatively neat and spreads slowly.
