Ground Orchid ‘Big Bob’
Bletilla striata
Native to the grassy slopes of central and southern Japan and the cool mountain slopes of China. Ground orchid prefers a sheltered site in light shade and does not tolerate consistently wet feet, but good for consistently moist soil. May not be reliably winter hardy in colder winters, better to apply a good organic mulch in late autumn or lift bulbs and store dry in a frost-free environment. Makes a good summer container plant for zones 2-4. Beautiful fan-like pleated leaves are showy in the spring through summer but the piece-de-resistance is the delicate downward-facing purplish-pink flowers with stripes and ridges on the lip (hence the latin name “striata”).
