Mallow, Rose
Hibiscus laevis
Our only Minnesota Native hibiscus. Gorgeous shrub covered with fabulous white flowers with deep crimson throat. Although the flowers aren’t as dinner-plate large as the cultivated hibiscus, it still is a standout of the garden, and one of the prettiest summer blooming natives in the state. Like all hibiscus, it takes a while to leaf out in the spring, but it is worth the wait. Plant in full sun anywhere the soil won’t dry out. As it also tolerates a few inches of water above its crown, it is a great plant for the bottom of a rain garden too. Can be planted in natural waterways.
